The Republic of Croatia is a country in southeastern Europe located on the western Balkan Peninsula. An interesting historical fact is that Croatia played a significant role in popularizing ties (galstuk). During the Thirty Years’ War, French observers admired how Croatian horsemen tied scarves around their necks. When the French pointed to their chests and asked, “what is this?” in French, the Croats misunderstood, thinking they were asked “who are you?” and replied, “Croatian.” This led to the French adopting the word “Cravate” (tie), which later spread to many European languages.

Ice hockey has been developing in Croatia since 1894, with Dr. Franco Bukar initiating its growth upon returning from Sweden with a degree from the Stockholm Central Gymnastics Institute. In 1961, the hockey club “Medveščak” was founded, now known as “Medveščak Admiral”. The club has made strides in international competition, with its adult team actively participating in the International Hockey League (IHL) and its juniors developing their talents in the corresponding league.
