Overview of Chiller Brand Preferences by Country and Climate

Introduction

Historically, chiller selection preferences in different countries reflect not only the marketing strategy of manufacturers, but above all the technical operating conditions. In air conditioning and process cooling systems, reliability, climate adaptability and availability of service infrastructure play a key role. It is these factors that form the “brand zones of influence” in specific countries and regions.

For the design or operating engineer, the question of selecting a cooling unit comes down to analysing three main parameters:

  1. The climatic specificity of the region.

In countries with moderate continental climate (Ukraine, Poland, Germany) the equipment should provide stable operation both at negative temperatures in winter and at high temperatures in summer. This requires the free cooling option, extended temperature ranges for glycol circuits and modular power regulation. On the contrary, in hot countries (Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco), priority is given to chillers with increased compressor thermostability and overheating protection.

  1. Availability of local production facilities and service base.

Where Carrier, Trane or Climaveneta plants are located within the country (France, Italy), these brands are naturally favoured. In countries without local production (e.g. Ukraine or Morocco), the key factor is service infrastructure and availability of qualified engineers able to service imported equipment.

  1. Technical philosophy of the manufacturer.

Each brand has its own engineering “doctrine”. Carrier traditionally focuses on the mass market, offering a wide model range. Trane emphasises reliability and durability, often at the expense of price. York (Johnson Controls) is focused on large projects and the industrial segment. Daikin is known for its high energy efficiency and introduction of inverter technologies. Italian manufacturers (Climaveneta, Rhoss, Aermec) demonstrate flexibility and a wide range of options with relatively compact solutions.

Thus, national brand preferences are not a matter of fashion or tradition. It is the result of objective engineering practice, where climate loads, energy conditions and operating culture form consistent patterns of choice. For example, Pakistan, where summer temperatures reach 45°C, has historically remained in York’s ‘zone of influence’, as these chillers were originally designed for the harsh conditions of the Middle East and South Asia. Germany, on the other hand, favours Trane, considering it the benchmark for reliability in year-round operation with high demands on energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Further in the article, in most cases, will appear only the market leaders – Trane, Carrier, YORK, Daikin, Climaveneta, but in Table 1 we have collected for you the top 20 most popular world manufacturers, which may also deserve attention.

General factors influencing the choice of brand and model

The choice of chiller in a particular country is determined by a combination of climatic conditions, availability of service facilities and the engineering philosophy of the manufacturer.

Climate

In countries with cold winters and hot summers (Ukraine, Poland, Germany), chiller units with extended operating range and free cooling option are prioritised. This makes it possible to reduce operating costs in the off-season. Frost-resistant versions of hydromodules, insulation and heating of pipelines, increased volumes of expansion tanks are required.

In hot countries (Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco), resistance to high condensation temperatures becomes crucial. Reinforced condensers, high-efficiency axial fans with frequency control, anti-corrosion coatings (epoxy, Blygold, BALTIBOND) to protect against dust and sand are required.

Service infrastructure

Even a reliable refrigeration machine requires regular maintenance. Where factories are present (Carrier and Trane in France, Climaveneta in Italy), the market is stable and equipment is adapted to local standards. In countries without their own production, the choice of brand is determined by the availability of official service centres.

For the countries under consideration, we have compiled for you table 2, where we have indicated which brands are the most common and whose production is located inside the country.

Take a look at our catalogue of chillers – units in various configurations, carefully checked for defects, set to the required temperature settings and shipped to you in perfect condition.

Ukraine

Main brands: Carrier, Trane, Daikin.

There is no local production, the market is fully imported. Chillers with free cooling and winter set are in demand in northern regions, tropical version – in southern regions. Carrier is traditionally strong in industrial facilities, Trane – in shopping centres, Daikin – in administrative buildings. In recent years, Chinese brands Gree and Midea have been strengthening in the medium-capacity segment.

Features of operation and popular options:

  1. Free cooling. Most projects use either an integrated or external free cooler. This allows you to reduce the load on compressors and save energy in the off-season. For Kiev and Kharkov, free cooling covers up to 4000-4500 annual hours.
  2. Cold carrier. Most often propylene glycol 25-35 %, less often – NaCl in industrial systems.
  3. Energy efficiency. New projects in Kiev, Lviv and Dnipro often require frequency control of pumps and fans. This is due to high electricity tariffs and the trend towards lower operating costs.
  4. Forcondensation heat recovery “heat recovery” is often used for heating in the off-season.

Operating experience

Carrier is well established in office buildings and shopping malls where energy efficiency and a wide range of sizes are critical. Trane – in industry and data centres where resource and reliability are key. Daikin holds its position due to its high energy efficiency and strong service support.

Italy

Main brands: Climaveneta (Mitsubishi Electric Hydronics), Rhoss, Aermec, BlueBox, Daikin, Carrier.

Italy is the centre of European production of chillers: there are plants of Climaveneta (Bassano del Grappa), Daikin Applied (Settimo Torinese), Carrier, Rhoss and Aermec. In the north, free cooling is in demand, in the south, tropical designs. Italian manufacturers are actively introducing solutions with low GWP (R-1234ze, R-32). Climaveneta and Aermec are leading in hotels and office buildings, Carrier – in airports and infrastructure.

Operating features and popular options:

  1. Reversible chillers/heat pumps. In demand in all climate zones, but especially in the centre and north.
  2. Free cooling. Free cooling systems are massively used in the north, especially in office buildings and industrial facilities.
  3. Compressors. Climaveneta actively uses screw compressors in the range of 300-1200 kW, as well as centrifugal solutions for large facilities. Daikin is introducing inverter scroll compressors for hotels and small business centres.
  4. Refrigeration carriers. In the north, glycol solutions are often used for anti-freeze protection, in the south it is almost always pure water.
  5. Energy efficiency. Italy is one of the EU leaders in implementing low GWP solutions (R-1234ze, R-32).
  6. Frequency regulation of compressor motors and condenser fans, adaptive regulation systems.

Operational experience

Climaveneta maintains its leadership thanks to its broad product line, high energy efficiency and deep integration into the Italian engineering school. Carrier is in demand in large infrastructure projects, from airports to industrial plants. Daikin strengthens its position with compact solutions and inverter technology, making it popular in the hotel and office sector. Unlike France and Germany, the Italian market is much more open to innovation and new types of refrigerants, due to its own production facilities and export culture.

Germany

Main brands: Trane, Carrier, Daikin.

Germany has a temperate climate with cold winters (down to -15 °C) and warm summers (up to 30… 35 °C). This determines the popularity. Trane is considered a benchmark for reliability and energy efficiency. Carrier is actively used in industrial facilities, Daikin – in offices and hotels. There are no large chiller factories in Germany, but high DIN and Ecodesign requirements form the operating culture. Free cooling is widely used, and glycol solutions are used in winter.

Features of operation and popular options:

  1. Coolant. Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are widely used. Water is used in frost-protected systems (central areas).
  2. Compressors. For office buildings and hotels, Daikin inverter scroll and centrifugal compressors are popular. For industrial facilities and data centres – Trane screw compressors.
  3. Service and standards. German companies strictly follow regular maintenance, use digital monitoring systems. The equipment is expected to last more than 15 years.
  4. Ecology. Most of the new units operate on refrigerants with low GWP (R-1234ze, R-513A). Carrier and Daikin are actively adapting their ranges to meet these requirements.
  5. Free cooling” function (up to 4000-4500 h/year in some regions).
  6. Heat recovery” function for utilisation of condensation heat (often used for heating in the off-season).
  7. BMS-integration with BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks protocols.
  8. Frequency control of compressors and pumps, as loads in buildings vary considerably seasonally.

Operating experience

Trane has traditionally been considered the “most reliable” brand. Its screw and centrifugal models have been successfully operating for decades, maintaining stable performance. Daikin has strengthened its position with inverter technology and compact chillers for the administrative sector. Carrier remains in demand in the segment of commercial buildings and industrial complexes, where the balance of price and energy efficiency is important. Italian brands are used to a limited extent, as in Germany the priority is global manufacturers with local offices and service centres.

France

Main brands: Carrier, Trane, CIAT, Daikin.

Carrier (Montluel), Trane (Épinal) and CIAT (Culoz) have plants in France. This forms a sustainable local ecosystem. Daikin is popular in the compact inverter chiller segment. Southern regions use heat pumps, while northern regions use free cooling. Acoustic requirements are particularly high in urban areas. France is characterised by a combination of two trends: mass application of split-systems and VRF in the residential sector and steady demand for medium capacity chillers (200-1000 kW) for office buildings, hotels and shopping malls.

The climate is heterogeneous:

  • in the north and centre – temperate (winter temperatures down to -10 °C, summer temperatures up to 30 °C);
  • in the south (Mediterranean) – hot summers (35… 40 °C), mild winters.

Operating features and popular options:

  1. Cold carrier. Water is used everywhere, antifreeze solutions only in regions with risk of freezing.
  2. Compressors. Daikin is promoting inverter scroll chillers for hotels and office centres. Carrier and Climaveneta successfully compete in the segment of screw units.
  3. Service and standards. The French market is oriented towards energy efficiency (ERP, Ecodesign). There is an active replacement of old installations with equipment with low GWP.
  4. Ecology. Government programmes stimulate transition to R-32 and R-1234ze. Refrigerant leakage is particularly strictly controlled.
  5. Noise-insulating fan and compressor casings and low-noise fans (for night mode).
  6. Reversible heat pumps down to -15 °C.
  7. Free cooling for administrative facilities in the north.
  8. Connection to control systems (BMS).

Operational experience

Daikin leads the segment thanks to its wide range of compact inverter chillers and heat pumps adapted to the French climate. Carrier is in demand in industrial areas and large commercial centres thanks to its reliability and well-developed service network. Climaveneta is widespread in the hotel sector and in facilities with special requirements to noise levels. Italian manufacturers are more popular than in Germany, as the French market is open to solutions with a lower price while maintaining quality.

United Kingdom

Top 3 brands by sales: Johnson Controls YORK, Carrier, Daikin.

The UK market is characterised by high maturity and stringent energy efficiency requirements. It is dominated by large international brands, primarily American (YORK, Carrier), but also Japanese (Daikin). There is practically no local production – the market is completely import-dependent, but service divisions of global companies are strong. YORK is particularly popular due to its historical connection: as in Pakistan, during the British Empire YORK actively promoted its solutions, and this tradition has been preserved. Carrier, on the other hand, is recognised for its stable performance in industrial and office applications, while Daikin has established itself in the market with its compact modular solutions and low energy consumption systems.

Operating features and popular options:

  1. Free cooling. Due to the mild climate, this option is in high demand everywhere: server room systems, data centres and offices use chillers with free cooling capability en masse.
  2. Compressors. YORK and Carrier actively use screw compressors in the range of 300-1200 kW, and for large objects – centrifugal compressors. Daikin occupies the niche of inverter scroll units for the hotel and office sector.
  3. Refrigeration carriers. Water is used more often than glycol mixtures, as the risk of freezing is minimised.
  4. Energy efficiency. The UK is one of the leaders in implementing Ecodesign and BREEAM standards. Refrigeration units with low energy consumption at partial loads are prioritised.
  5. Acoustic enclosures – especially in residential areas and historic centres.
  6. Free cooling (both built-in and as external dry coolers with bypass)

Operational experience

YORK has maintained a strong position due to the large number of units installed since the 1970s and 1980s. Many older YORKs are being replaced by modern models of the same brand due to the habit of designers and operators. Carrier in Britain is valued for its flexibility of solutions: a wide range of models can cover applications from shopping centres to pharmaceutical production. Daikin competes with combined heat pumps, especially in projects with limited space and high noise requirements.

Pakistan

Main brands: YORK (Johnson Controls), Carrier, Trane.

YORK occupies a special place due to its historical connection with the British engineering school. The climate is hot ( 40… 45 °C), which requires tropical design, reinforced condensers and liquid injection. Free cooling is not available. Chinese brands Gree and Haier are strengthening their positions in the hotel and office segment due to low prices

Pakistan has long hot summers with temperatures of 40 to 48 °C. In some regions, condensation can reach 55 °C or higher in summer.

Operating features and popular options:

  1. Electricity supply. Frequent power surges and outages. Therefore, machines with a wide range of power tolerances and the ability to connect the UPS to an automation system are in demand. York traditionally offers such solutions.
  2. Automation system. Projects often use simple control panels with a basic set of functions. More complex BMS integration is rare, which distinguishes the market from Europe.
  3. Cold carrier. Mostly water is used, less frequently water-glycol mixtures are used (where winter operation is possible).
  4. Types of compressors. For capacities of 300-1000 kW York and Trane screw compressors are more often used. Carrier scroll compressors are used in small facilities.
  5. Oil pressure and winding temperature monitoring systems for screw compressors.

Operational experience

York in Pakistan is considered the benchmark and is chosen even though the price is high. Carrier ranks second due to affordability and ease of operation. Trane is used in large projects where durability is important and there is funding for quality service support. Italian brands are hardly represented: high temperature and dusty environment quickly put them out of operation with standard equipment.

Egypt

Main brands: Carrier, Trane, YORK.

Carrier has a factory in Cairo, which provides leading positions and a developed service network. Trane is in demand in infrastructure and hotel business. YORK holds a share in industrial applications. The climate is hot, anti-corrosion coatings and tropical equipment are required. Free cooling is hardly ever used.

Egypt is characterised by a long hot season, with temperatures often exceeding 45 °C. In coastal areas, salty air is a significant factor, and in desert areas, high concentrations of dust and sand. These conditions require:

  • heat exchangers with anti-corrosion coating (epoxy, Blygold);
  • higher performance condenser fans equipped with VFD for smooth regulation;

Operating features and popular options:

  1. Compressors. Screw and centrifugal compressors are the most common. In climates with high air temperatures, the life of scroll compressors is sharply reduced, so they are used only for small capacities.
  2. Cold carrier. In most systems, water is used, as there is no risk of negative temperatures. This simplifies the scheme, but increases the requirements for water quality and corrosion protection.
  3. Service. In the Egyptian environment, the availability of local service personnel and spare parts warehouses is critical. Carrier benefits from its own plant, York and Trane rely on local partners.
  4. Energy efficiency. High load year-round operation requires chillers with optimised partial load cycles. Trane and York traditionally offer solutions with screw compressors and high-efficiency evaporators.
  5. Oil and bearing monitoring systems for screw compressors.

Operational experience

Carrier is the most popular choice due to localised manufacturing and low cost of ownership. Trane is favoured by large facilities with demands on reliability and equipment life. York occupies a niche of premium solutions, especially for facilities with unstable power supply, where compressor protection and automation flexibility are important. Italian brands are almost never used: dust, heat and salty air quickly lead to degradation of heat exchangers without special coatings.

Morocco

The top 3 brands by sales are Trane, Carrier, York.

Market

Morocco is a hot and dry country with a relatively small market compared to Egypt or the Gulf countries. In such conditions, customers are primarily focused on the reliability and life of equipment. The market is close to the Egyptian market. Trane is perceived as a benchmark for reliability in office buildings. Carrier is strong in the segment of shopping malls. Daikin and LG occupy the hotel sector

Average summer temperatures reach 35 … 40 °C, with temperatures rising above 45 °C in some regions (southern regions, areas near the Sahara). Main operational risks: dust and sand, high solar radiation, overheating of condensers. This requires:

  • increased surface area of the condensers;
  • mandatory anti-corrosion coating of the lamellae;
  • protection of electrical cabinets against overheating and dust ingress (IP55, tropical version).

Operating features and popular options:

  1. System types. Air-cooled chillers are the most common, as access to water is limited and its quality is poor.
  2. Compressors. In medium to large capacities, Trane and York screw compressors dominate. For office buildings, Carrier scroll compressors are used.
  3. Service. Service infrastructure is underdeveloped, so customers tend to choose equipment that requires minimal maintenance. This is one of the reasons for the dominance of Trane: screw compressors of this brand have a long service life and are less prone to failures.
  4. Energy efficiency. There are no strict energy conservation requirements in the country, but the high cost of electricity forces designers to pay attention to EER. Trane and Carrier offer machines with high efficiency at partial loads.
  5. Built-in monitoring systems (BAS-ready) to minimise service visits.
  6. Corrosion-resistant coated condensers with increased heat transfer surface.

Operational experience

Trane is perceived as the benchmark for reliability and is capable of operating for up to 8-12 years without significant intervention. Carrier is used where availability and price are important, but subject to regular service. York is chosen for facilities with high load and long operating time, but high cost and limited service support restrain its share. Italian manufacturers are practically not represented: for local conditions, standard equipment cannot withstand climatic loads.

Comparison of chillers for cold and warm climates

The design and configuration depends directly on the climatic conditions of operation. Even identical models delivered to Scandinavia and, for example, North Africa, will differ in design, additional components and automation settings. The key differences are summarised below.

Chillers for cold climates

  1. Cold Carrier. Water without additives is rarely used. More often ethylene glycol or propylene glycol is used at a concentration of 20-40 % to avoid freezing in the pipework. This increases the viscosity of the coolant and leads to an increase in the energy consumption of pumps, which must be taken into account at the selection stage.
  2. Condensers and fans. Fans should be equipped with frequency regulation or “step” control to prevent overcooling and work at sub-zero temperatures. Often installed winter-kit to maintain a stable condensing pressure.
  3. Compressors. More often screw and centrifugal compressors are used, which are resistant to long-term operation at partial loads, additional crankcase heating is required.
  4. Automation. Controllers are equipped with “soft start” functions and antifreeze algorithms (constant control of evaporator and return water temperature).

Chillers for warm climates

  1. Coolant. Almost always pure water, without antifreeze. The main objective is high heat capacity and low hydraulic losses.
  2. Condensers and fans. Large area condensers, tropical design (tₒ up to 50… 55 °C). High capacity fans, with overheating protection and the ability to operate in dusty conditions.
  3. Compressors. Scroll and screw compressors in tropical designs are widely used. For particularly hot regions (North Africa, Middle East) compressors with liquid injection or intercooling are used.
  4. Automation. Controllers take into account high outdoor temperatures and automatically adjust fan speeds and refrigerant supply to prevent compressor overheating.

Conclusion

An analysis of chiller brand preferences in different countries shows that the choice of equipment is determined not only by price or availability, but also by a combination of historical factors, climatic conditions and the level of technical culture of the market.

Climatic specifics dictate the equipment configuration. In cold regions, winter options, free cooling, frost protection and heat pump operation are crucial. In hot regions, tropical options, increased corrosion resistance and heat exchanger efficiency at extremely high condensing temperatures are critical. Mistakes at the option selection stage result in higher operating costs and shorter equipment life.

Practical operating experience confirms that brand reliability is determined not so much by the country of origin as by the depth of adaptation of a particular model to the conditions of the region. Trane and Carrier show maximum durability in industrial facilities, Daikin and Climaveneta – high efficiency in the hotel and office segment, YORK maintains its position due to its historical presence and large-scale references.

For engineers and customers the main conclusion is obvious: the right choice of brand and equipment is possible only when taking into account real operating conditions, availability of service support and life cycle analysis of equipment, not only capital expenditures. It is this approach that ensures sustainable operation of air conditioning and industrial refrigeration systems throughout their entire service life.
