What to Do with an Old Chiller? A Complete Guide to Resale, Disposal, and the Industrial Refrigeration Aftermarket

Who’s Buying Used Refrigeration Equipment — and Why?

Every facility eventually faces a point where existing equipment can no longer meet new demands. Outdated automation, insufficient capacity, or a change in production logic — whatever the reason, what seems obsolete for one business can be an opportunity for another.

In recent years, a clear trend has emerged in the refrigeration market: companies are not only purchasing equipment but also actively selling their used units. The reasons are straightforward:

  • Economic instability and stalled investments are forcing businesses to optimize existing assets or extract residual value from them.
  • Aging equipment, especially in industries with seasonal loads (dairy farms, food processing, logistics, retail), is reaching its limits.
  • Stricter refrigerant regulations (such as the ban on R22, phase-out of R407C, GWP requirements below 150 or 750) demand upgrades or disposal.
  • Increased interest in recycling and reuse of components — compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, and controls.
  • Lack of an organized disposal market — many businesses simply don’t know what to do with outdated or non-functional HVAC systems.

As a result, used chillers often sit idle in warehouses or machine rooms, offering no benefit and posing risks — from refrigerant leaks to regulatory fines.

Who to Sell To

In a hot market with unstable lead times and volatile exchange rates, used industrial equipment offers real opportunities for businesses to stay afloat — especially when it comes to units with the right specifications, capable of solving critical tasks on short notice.

This is the philosophy behind the secondary market: equipment continues to operate — just in a different place and role.

This same principle laid the foundation for EVROPROM.
We became the link between those upgrading their systems and those seeking affordable, ready-to-deploy solutions. Our portfolio includes hundreds of cases where giving equipment a second life led to new operational efficiency at another facility.

Sure, there are other companies in the used equipment space. But we bring something more:

  • Our own engineering base
  • A dedicated testing station
  • A team that determines whether a chiller can be restored, dismantled for parts, or sold as-is

What sets us apart is not only the approach — but the standards:

  • Rapid equipment assessment via photo, video, or technical specifications
  • A clear checklist of key parameters: model, capacity, year of manufacture, runtime, condition of heat exchangers, compressors, and automation
  • Consultation on next steps — from dismantling prep to refrigerant disposal
  • Document support, including disposal certificates, removal confirmations, and purchase agreements
  • Connections with certified organizations — if equipment requires disposal under F-Gas or ISO regulations

What Can Be Sold? More Than You Think

We deal with more than just fully functional chillers. We evaluate all types — from low-runtime units to those requiring restoration.

  1. Chillers:
  • Air-cooled or water-cooled
  • With heat pump function
  • In good working order or in need of repair
  • With low operating hours
  • Even partially non-functional
  1. Chillers for parts:
  • Severely damaged or beyond repair
  • Outdated models with still-relevant components
  • Dismantled sections (free cooling modules, hydraulic kits, etc.)

  1. Components and modules:
  • Screw compressors (Bitzer, Carlyle, Copeland)
  • Scroll compressors (Copeland, Daikin)
  • Heat exchangers
  • Evaporators and condensers
  • Pump stations (Wilo, Grundfos, Lowara)
  • Variable frequency drives, control panels, automation controllers

What to Do in Different Scenarios

A Checklist for Engineers, Technical Directors, or Business Owners

Before you write off equipment — go through this checklist. In many cases, the unit can be sold, restored, or reused.

  1. The chiller or unit is functional but no longer in use?
    Check the following:
  • Year of manufacture: no more than 15 years old
  • Compressor brand: Bitzer, Copeland, Danfoss, Frascold, etc.
  • Refrigerant type: R134a, R410A, R407C (or others, preferably leak-free)
  • Extra options: heat pump, free cooling, hydraulic module, frequency inverters

In this case, the equipment can likely be resold. We offer buyout or commission-based options.

  1. The unit is partially functional or needs repairs?
    Check:
  • What’s faulty: compressor, fans, controls, heat exchanger?
  • Is the housing and piping still intact?
  • Can it be connected and powered on?

We’ll consider such chillers too — they may serve as a restoration base or parts source.

  1. The equipment has been dismantled or is in storage?
    Clarify:
  • Storage conditions (under roof, indoors, outdoors)
  • Condition of piping, controllers, pumps
  • Availability of technical documentation or photos

We accept warehouse-stored units — if the core components are preserved.

  1. Replacing an old system with a new one or switching equipment types?
    Then:
  • Plan dismantling and logistics ahead of time
  • We can arrange removal, decommissioning, partial compensation, or a trade-in offer against new equipment

Whatever the case — don’t make the decision alone.
Message us and we’ll advise you for free: whether to sell, repair, part out, or reallocate the system.

How the Equipment Buyback Process Works

We understand that decommissioning or selling industrial refrigeration equipment is more than just a transaction. It’s logistics, responsibility, documentation — and often, tight deadlines. That’s why we’ve designed our buyback process to be as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Step-by-step process:

  1. You send us the information
Photos, model, year of manufacture, refrigerant type, condition, and a short description. You can send everything directly from your phone — we just need the key specs.
  2. You receive a preliminary assessment
We’ll tell you right away whether it’s worth proceeding. If it is — we’ll provide a rough price range.
  3. Technical inspection
Our technician can visit your site, or we can conduct everything over video. No need to waste time on unnecessary site visits.
  4. We agree on price and terms
We offer fair market pricing, transparent calculations, and convenient payment methods.
  5. We sign the contract and pay an advance or 100% upfront
Depending on the deal and the condition of the unit, full prepayment is possible — especially if you’ve sold us equipment before.
  6. We arrange dismantling and pickup from your site
Our partners will professionally load and remove the equipment — with no stress or extra costs on your side.
  7. You receive final payment and peace of mind
All documents, payment confirmations, and reports are handled officially.
If the unit is suitable for resale, we’ll even offer you a discount on new equipment in stock.

Why it’s convenient:
✔ No need to search for a buyer
✔ No need to figure out what to do with the equipment
