Case Study: Selecting a Chiller for a Dairy Farm — How We Solved a Critical Milk Cooling Challenge

Chiller for a Dairy Farm

In the dairy industry, cooling systems are not just equipment — they are a critical necessity for maintaining stable operations and preserving product quality.
Cooling milk to 4°C immediately after milking prevents bacterial growth and retains all of the milk’s beneficial properties. Failure to maintain the correct temperature can compromise not only safety but also taste — ultimately affecting consumer demand.

This article presents a real case from our practice where the importance of reliable milk cooling demanded fast and effective action.

The Challenge: Emergency Chiller Replacement at a Dairy Farm

Equipment that performs such critical functions must not fail.
Our client’s company is involved in milk production and distribution, as well as the sale of both breeding and slaughter livestock — all of which require strict temperature control at every stage of the production process.

When the chiller at the farm failed, the challenge was not only to restore proper milk cooling but to urgently replace the equipment to prevent product loss.
With time constraints in play, we had to quickly find a technically suitable solution to restore uninterrupted operation of the cooling system.

How We Approached the Task

Given the time constraints and the need for a reliable, high-performance solution for milk cooling, we proposed the Carrier 30RB-100R chiller — one of the most efficient models available on the market.

Chiller capacity: 107 kW — more than sufficient to ensure stable and effective cooling of large milk volumes.

Responding to Urgent Requirements

Although the client initially requested a chiller with a capacity of 50 kW, we recommended a 100 kW unit with additional capacity.
This approach offered flexibility and confidence that the system could handle increased loads should production needs grow in the future.

Integrated Hydraulic Module

The Carrier 30RB-100R includes Grundfos AC25-116 pumps and an expansion tank — a key advantage that ensures reliable circulation of chilled water to the end user.
The presence of this integrated hydraulic module eliminated the need for the client to purchase and install additional pumping equipment.

Use of Eco-Friendly R32 Refrigerant

The chiller operates on R32, a modern, environmentally responsible refrigerant that complies with EU standards for low-GWP emissions.

Result: Stable Operation and Long-Term Savings

Following the installation of the Carrier 30RB-100R chiller, the dairy resumed production without delays.
The additional capacity ensured operational reliability and extended equipment life.
In addition, the unit demonstrated high energy efficiency, which contributed significantly to reducing operational expenses.

Why the Carrier 30RB-100R Was the Right Choice

  • Power reserve — always a smart decision, especially when anticipating future production expansion.
  • Scroll compressors and the use of R32 refrigerant ensure both long-term reliability and environmental responsibility.
  • The chiller is easy to integrate into existing farm cooling infrastructure, and its standardized components simplify service and maintenance procedures.

Conclusion: Strategic Chiller Selection for the Dairy Industry

Choosing a chiller for dairy production is always a strategic investment.
It must not only meet current technical needs, but also remain scalable and adaptable to increasing production volumes over time.
